UGANDA’s top junior player, Daniel Ruyange scored a major victory in his career when he lifted the Under-18 boys' singles title at the JD Tennis Academy Hardcourt junior championships in Nairobi on Sunday.
Seeded third in the event, Ruyange upset second seed Maurice Namai of Kenya 4-2, 4-1 to emerge as the undisputed champion.
“This is my first time to win on hardcourt. I played in last year's final at Parklands sports club but lost. I owe my success to hardwork and determination,†the Ugandan said after his meteoric feat.
On his way to his first victory on Kenyan soil, Ruyange dismissed local top seed, Ronny Ndinya 4-5 (3) 4-2 4-1 in the semi final.
Ruyange emulated his compatriot, Rosette Musoke, the only other Ugandan player to have won tournaments in Kenya.
In the girls' Under-18 final, Kenyan Tamara Orwa claimed the title.
The event was sponsored by a veteran rally ace Jimmy Davies who is the brain behind the JD Academy.
