President Yoweri Museveni has said he has a list of 30 public officials who, he said, are frustrating investors.
“One investor came to me recently complaining that he had talked to 30 public officials, none of whom was able to help him. I now have the list of the 30 people he talked to,” Museveni said on Capital Gang on Saturday.
Dr. Maggie Kigozi is the executive director of the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), a statutory body set up in 1991 to facilitate investors, including issuing investment licenses.
Museveni did not, however, disclose the name of the investor who approached him and none of the panelists, which included Gulu Municipality MP Norbert Mao, and Bernard Tabaire of The Monitor pressured him to do so.
Museveni emphatically said, “We created that UIA office as a one-stop centre to help investors looking for anything. Dr. Kigozi is my sister. We were together in the resistance and I will see how to help her if she has any problem, otherwise she has all the powers to solve these problems,”
Museveni said that he had assigned his senior advisor on AGOA and trade, Geoffrey Onegi Obel, together with Susan Muhwezi, his private secretary in charge of AGOA, to spy on corrupt public officials who are frustrating investors.
“I have appointed Geoffrey Onegi Obel and Susan Muhwezi to spy on those public officials who are frustrating investors. So if there is any investor who is being frustrated, let him or her go and talk to Obel or Susan Muhwezi. They will immediately tell me and I will roast those people and also rectify the problem,” Museveni said.
