At least 49 bodies, 10 of them of newly-born babies, were recovered from pit-latrines and other areas last year, the police said on Thursday.
All the 10 bodies were of babies apparently thrown in pit-latrines deliberately, by their mothers.
The Police further said of the 56 people saved from similar situations, 27 were babies who had been dumped in the pits by their mothers.

The chief Fire Officer, Joseph Mugisa (pictured above), while presenting the annual report for the fire brigade in and around the city for the year 2002, also said property estimated at sh3.8b had gone up in flames in a total 361 fires.
Three fires, thought to be the biggest that broke out in three schools, left losses estimated at about sh85m.
This included the Nabisunsa Girls School fire which gutted a dormitory and a German laboratory leaving behind a loss estimated at sh30m.
