ANTI-riot Police armed with tear-gas canisters and rubber bullets arrived in Kinkizi west constituency yesterday for the nomination exercise of parliamentary candidates which begins today.
Another Police contingent was expected to arrive later in the evening.
A UPDF force from Kanyatogoro Barracks was on standby in case there is breach of peace during the two-day exercise, military sources said.
Defence minister Amama Mbabazi had been scheduled to be nominated first at kanungu district headquarters at noon.
His opponent James Musinguzi Garuga pulled out the race yesterday soon after Mbarara High court dismissed his application to postpone the nominations.
Musinguzi said he did not want to endanger the lives of his constituents.
His lawyer Ngaruye Ruhindi said they would not pick another person to contest in Musinguzi’s place since the person would suffer the same injustice
The Electoral Commission has sent one of the biggest teams for an electoral process, headed by commissioner Joseph Biribonwa.
Police has not recorded any case of intimidation by either side. Contrary to reports of heavy UPDF deployment, no military personnel has been seen in the town or villages in the constituency.
However, Mbabazi has been seen moving around in a military convoy, warning his supporters against intimidating his opponent’s supporters.
