Uganda and Israel have pledged to strengthen economic cooperation and signed a trade and investment agreement.
President Yoweri Museveni and the Israeli foreign minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, met at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem on Tuesday during which they undertook to strengthen cooperation between their countries, a statement issued by the Presidential Press Unit said yesterday.
Museveni, who arrived in Israel on Monday for a six-day visit, met Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in his office in Jerusalem, State House Nakasero said in a statement late yesterday. It said Museveni invited Israeli investors to Uganda. Sharon hailed Museveni for his efforts to fight global terrorism.
Netanyahu welcomed Museveni’s suggestion for greater involvement of Africa in the search for a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Museveni said African countries have historical links with the Palestinian struggle and could explain to the Palestinians the need to abandon terrorism as a means to achieve their freedom.
The statement said Museveni also toured the Yad Veasham Memorial Institute for the holocaust of the six million Jews killed during World War II.
Museveni gave interviews to The Jerusalem Post, a leading English daily in Israel, and to two TV channels 1 and 2.
Israeli ambassador to Kenya and Uganda Yaacov Amitai said Museveni’s visit was the first by a Ugandan president in decades.
