Farmers of the Doho Rice Scheme, one of Uganda’s largest rice projects, are preparing to take over management from the Government.

Representatives of the 2000 farmers met at Doho last week to form committees to implement strategies involving all stakeholders.

Dr. John Mudusu, the chairman of the Doho executive board, told The New Vision the committees have been formed for increasing production, training managers, processors and marketeers.

He said the committees will also look into mobilisation of funds, materials for farming and human resources development for the new management of the scheme.

“We shall also be dealing with about diversification of agro-business in Doho, especially the post-harvest production,” Mudusu said.

He hinted that the main issues the board will look at are development oriented and make it possible for the rice farmers farmers to uplift their standards of life.

Mudusu said the executive board hopes that government will rehabilitate the scheme before handing it over to them.

Doho Rice Scheme, which is over 1000 hectares, was last rehabilitated in 1986 by Chinese experts. Over the years output levels have been be declining due to poor management and the 1997 El-Nino effects.
