THE police have beefed up security in Mukono district following cases of violence between supporters of rival candidates for the district seat, reports Nicholas Kajoba.

Two candidates, Francis Lukooya Mukoome and Godfrey Ddamulira Kyeyune, are tussling it out in a by-election following the nullification of Kanakulya Banga’s election for lack of academic qualifications.

The district police commander, Martin Abilu, said various cases of violence had been registered.

“We got some complains from the two camps of Lukooya and Ddamulira that candidates’ meeting were marred by violence. So we decided to beef up security during their rallies,” he said.

Lukooya is supported by moderate Movementists, including the district Movement boss, Kalule Kagodo.

Kyeyune is backed by former district chairman, Joseph Banga and other multipartyists.

The campaigns that kicked off on Monday have fetched a low turn up as some people say they are tired of campaigns and want to concentrate on development programmes.

Lukooya promised advance district programmes like Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture, among others.

He also vowed to fight the misappropriation of district funds.

“When you elect me, I will make sure that the district funds are not misappropriated by any body. Am ready to unite people in the district” he said.

Ddamulira said he was ready to implement all programmes geared towards development.
