THE US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has named Uganda’s late Jimmy Higenyi as one of 19 journalists killed worldwide for their work in 2002.
Higenyi, a student at the United Media Consultants and Trainers, was killed while covering a rally in Kampala, organised by the Uganda Peoples’ Congress. He had been assigned the story as part of his journalism coursework.
In its report released in New York, CPJ said although the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala, apologised for Higenyi’s death and said the Police took full responsibility, “at year’s end, no disciplinary action had been taken against the officers involved in the shooting.”
CPJ observed that the Uganda government had banned the gathering under Article 269 of the Constitution, which outlaws all political activity in the country.
It said the number of 19 journalists killed in 2002, marked a sharp decrease from 2001 when 37 journalists were killed. Ends
