RETIRED Lt. Dan Mugarura (above) was yesterday charged with treason on the same file with three politicians linked to the Reform Agenda and the rebel People’s Redemption Army (PRA).

Mugarura, 44, a resident of Kisaasi, Kampala, appeared before Buganda road chief magistrate Frank Othembi, where three other suspects accused of financing PRA activities were charged on different days in the last five days.

Former banker Francis Ogwang Olebe and fellow Teso politician Charles Ekemu were charged on Thursday, January 16.

Pascal Gakyaro, a senior Civil Aviation Authority official, was charged on Monday.
Othembi advised Mugarura to seek bail in the high court which has jurisdiction over treason cases.

Mbarara municipality MP, Winnie Byanyima, Reform Agenda’s deputy vice-chairperson, attended court.

Prosecution said between January 2001 and January 2002, Mugarura contrived a plot to overthrow the Government by force of arms.

Mugarura was also accused of aiding the creation of the PRA which is allegedly led by renegade UPDF officers, Col. Samson Mande and Col. Anthony Kyakabale.

He was further accused of recruiting rebels and establishing rebel camps in Kumi, Kaberamaido, Soroti, West Nile, Katakwi and in western Uganda.

Prosecution said Mugarura solicited funds and gathered intelligence information for the PRA.

Mugarura was also charged with misprision of treason (failure to report treason) which he denied before the chief magistrate.
