MEMBERS of Parliament have saluted long-serving local government minister Jaberi Bidandi Ssali for his advice that Ugandans should stop agitating for a third term for the President.

Five MPs representing Kampala district at a joint press conference held at Parliament yesterday criticised Prime minister Apollo Nsibambi for ‘supressing’ ministers’ views which they express in earnest.

“Honourable Bidandi Ssali is now coming out more openly in a nationalistic manner. For us, we give him all the salute to come out and speak more openly because his ideas are gaining momentum,” the MPs said.

Ssebuliba Mutumba (Kawempe south), Mike Mabikke (Makindye East), Nsubuga Nsambu (Makindye West), Ken Lukyamuzi (Rubaga South) and Latif Ssebagala (Kawempe North) attended the press briefing, at which they issued a joint communique.

The remarks follow a recent statement by Bidandi that Ugandans should stop agitating for a third term for the president because it would set a bad precedent for future leaders who may also wish to change the constitution for their own benefit.

Bidandi’s remarks attracted sharp criticism from Nsibambi, who in an exclusive interview with The New Vision said Bidandi was politically indisciplined and seeking cheap popularity.

Meanwhile, James Odong reports that Kashari MP John Kazoora has said, “Nsibambi is a gambler, a political traveller in the wilderness. For a Prime Minister to come in the papers and say Bidandi is indisciplined, he himself is indisciplined because as a government they should have an internal mechanism to handle such matters” Kazoora said.

And, Hillary Nsambu writes that the Democratic Party has criticised Nsibambi, for attacking Bidandi Ssali and referring to him as “indisciplined”.

In a January 23 document signed by the party’s executive and public relations officer, Jude Mbabaali and faxed to The New Vision, DP questioned what prompted Nsibambi’s utterances on Bidandi.
