THE Police Force has called for more stringent measures to help reduce the high rate of carnage on the roads.

Road accidents claimed over 2,000 lives in 2002, a high increase over the 1,819 lives lost in 2001. Over 15,000 people suffered injuries.

The Police commissioner for traffic, Wilson Ahimbisibwe, yesterday called upon the Government to strengthen efforts to reduce road accidents countrywide.

He was speaking for the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala, at the launch of American Insurance Group (AIG)’s new insurance policies.

AIG was launching the Child Education, and Family Protection insurance polices at the Hotel Equatoria.

Ahimbisibwe said over the past two years, an estimated 31,676 Ugandans have been affected, many being family bread winners.

The Chairman of the Uganda Insurance Commission, Frederick Magezi, said the commission was working out a better way of enforcing insurance policies that are affordable by the ordinary people.
