NATIONAL motorcycle champion Abed Lubambula will unleash his US $6000 (sh11.1m) Yamaha YZ in the Yamaha motor cross championship at Garuga on Sunday.

Lubambula, who returned from Nagoya, Japan a fortnight ago with the 250cc bike bought for him by his Japanese friend Amanda Wijishinga, told The New Vision that he was targeting both the 2003 Africa title and a fourth straight national championship. He is yet to find a sponsor.

“South Africans beat me last time because I had an inferior motorcycle. I can now compete favourably with the continent’s top riders,” said Lubambula who finished sixth in the 2002 African Motorcycle championship in Nairobi, Kenya.

Lubambula will use the Garuga race to test his new motorcycle ahead of the Africa championship in Namibia in March.

The Garuga race has so far attracted 23 riders from Southern Motor Club, Younger Racing Club, Speedway and Entebbe Rally Club.

The motor cross championship will run alongside the Team Blick fundraising sprint.

Twenty drivers including top guns Emma Katto, Charles Muhangi, Moses Lumala, Ranjit Kuku and Dipu Ruparelia are in the sprint in support of upcoming drivers Arthur and William Blick.

National rally champion Charlie Lubega is one other big gun yet to enter.
