THE Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) have rescued 48 former abductees from the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels in Gulu and Kitgum districts.
The UPDF spokesman based in Gulu, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, said 18 abductees were rescued in Gulu during battles with the rebels in the areas of Anaka in Nwoya county, Ajulu in Aswa and Idure in Omoro county.
Ankunda said the areas were calm after the confrontation with the rebels.
In Kitgum district, the UPDF also rescued at least 30 captives from the rebels during a battle at Tumangu, west of Kitgum town.
The Resident District Commissioner, Kitgum, Santo Okot Lapolo, said two abductees were injured during the battle to rescue them on Tuesday night.
The rebels struck Lalogi sub-county the same night and abducted 10 people to carry the food and property they had looted from the residents.
The LC3 chairman, Stephen Okello, said the rebels fled with eight captives.
The UPDF offensive is part of the Operation Iron Fist launched mid-last year to end the LRA menace.
