THE newly-instituted interim steering committee for the Uganda Amateur Athletics Federation (UAAF) will ensure that the forthcoming East African regional cross-country goes according to schedule.

The committee has been holding consultative meetings with stakeholders in the sport especially the previous executive to ensure the event slated for March 2 at Entebbe doesnot experience any obstacles.

“We have been meeting with them to ensure smooth progress of the event. They need our technical acumen and we’re willing to co-operate,” said Okot Omwony, the erstwhile UAAF vice president (technical).

The said event will be employed as the yardstick for the selection of the national team to represent Uganda in the World Cross country competition in March.

Omwony hailed the transition committee for their determined efforts to restore sanity and calm in the athletics-governing body and expressed optimism that elections to bring in a more permanent administration might be held sooner than expected. “They are really working hard. If they continue in this spirit, then elections might be a possibility soon.”

The committee, installed by National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary, Abbey Lutaaya, was instructed to restore unity in the body since filling the vacuum created by the aborted UAAF general elections.
