THE Government has paid sh44m to the families of health workers who died during the 2000 ebola outbreak in Gulu, reports Dennis Ojwee.
State minister for health Capt. Mike Mukula recently handed over the cheques, part of the sh818m, to 22 beneficiaries.
Only four families got their cheques immediately, while the rest were retained following discrepancies in the names of the claimants and the earlier list submitted to the Ministry of Health.
Among those paid immediately was Margaret Lukwiya, widow of the late Dr. Matthew Lukwiya, the then medical superintendent of Lacor Hospital, and Dr. Joel Ongebo whose wife was a nurse.
Ebola broke out in Gulu in December 2000 and spread to Masindi and Mbarara districts killing 173 people.
A total of 150, including medical workers died in Gulu.
Mukula, who laid a wreath on Lukwiya’s grave at Bar Dege, where over 130 ebola victims were buried, promised to write to President Yoweri Museveni, requesting him to declare the late Lukwiya and selected nurses national heroes.
The function at the Gulu district council hall, was attended by the director general of health services, Prof. Francis Omaswa, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mohammad Kezala and the resident district commissioner, Max Omeda. Ends
