GOVERNMENT will construct four new power stations with financial assistance from the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility.
“The projects will not only be able to fully transform the rural areas, but also pull the millions of people out of grinding poverty,” Kabagambe-Kaliisa, the energy permanent secretary told The New Vision recently.
He is also chairman of the Rural Electrification Fund (REF).
The four include the West Nile Power Project, the Kakira Co-generation Project, the Kisiizi project and the Rukungiri- Bushenyi project.
He said the West Nile Power Project involves construction of a 3.3 MW power plant on River Nyangak and a sub-transmission line between Arua and Nebbi.
The Kakira Co-generation project, is centred on the development of a power generation plant from baggase by the private sector. The Kisiizi and Rukungiri-Bushenyi projects will mean expansion of the Kisiizi plant, construction of another small power plant on Ishasha River and development of an electricity distribution network in Rukungiri and Bushenyi districts.
“We have as well initiated short to medium term major rural electrification programmes, with development partners in the districts of Ssembabule, Kabale, Bundibugyo, Kyenjojo, Pader, Kibaale, Kaberamaido and Katakwi,” Kaliisa said.
New Vision in an interview recently.
He said that flame work has been laid to appoint a Rural Electrification Agency, which will foresee all the projects to their fruitful end. Ends
