SIR— Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) would like to clarify the wide misconception
about the story which appeared in The Monitor of February 12, under the title “Lawyer unhappy with Museveni’s doctorate.”
Mbarara University of Science and Technology wishes
to inform the general public that it did not award the President (pictured left) a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
According to the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001, Section 47, “The senate may award honorary degrees to persons who have excelled in any sector of life as it may deem fit.” The President was awarded an honorary LLD (Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa). And the university will continue to award such degrees to deserving persons. Dr Peter Mugyenyi of
the Joint Clinical Research Centre, too, for example, was awarded the same degree at the same ceremony. Honorary degrees are not taught degrees or a result of research. We congratulate the President and Dr Mugyenyi for deserving this prestigious award.
