Wednesdays are not normally days to party in Kampala, but last week was extremely different as Shangri-la Hotel and Shanghai Restaurant celebrated their 10th anniversary. By 6.30pm, there was no parking space left at this small hotel located about a minute away from State House.
Owner Mei-Yuan Yu Lin was there to welcome her guests and when she realised that the house was full, she moved to the piano. She played it so well that Mayor Ssebana Kizito and Justice George Kanyeihamba were seen nodding their heads in approval. Afterwards, she gave a simple speech thanking whoever had helped her realise her dream. She was so happy that she donated sh2.4m to charities, including Little Sisters of St. Francis Street Children Rehabilitation Centre, National Council for Children and Mbuya Parish’s Reach Out HIV/AIDS Initiative. The employees walked away with lots of prizes as well.
Then other speakers came and the public address system decided to collapse. So, we didn’t even hear what the Master of Ceremonies Kaddumukasa Kironde II was talking about. But with the speeches done, it was time to socialise with the patrons. A Klaus-less Madeleine Holderbaum was in attendance, as well as George Michael Fashions’ Gladys Mukula. Nile bank’s Richard Byarugaba, Uganda Telecom’s Aldraine Nsubuga and travel consultant Eugene Windt of Swan Air where there too, sharing jokes with Edith Byanyima. William Blick, in company of a light-skinned girl, walked in later. Mengo youth minister Kabuuza Mukasa and Irene Kulabako also made appearances.
Dinnertime came and this was the highlight of the night. A mouth-watering Chinese dinner was served and it emphasised that “what you see and eat must be pleasing both to the eye and the palette.”Ends
