THE Soroti LC5 chairman Capt. John Emily Otekat has said that he will convince the district council to demote headteachers who failed to improve school grades.

He said that primary schools in the district performed poorly because school heads did not put in adequate effort to ensure academic excellence.

Otekat noted that headteachers did not guide their teachers and were absent from school for weeks.

He was on Tuesday meeting students from Makerere university business school at Soroti Lukiiko hall.

The LC5 chairman said that insecurity in Katakwi district had also contributed to the poor Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) results for the year 2002.

Michael Etoyu, the Soroti District Education Officer (DEO), told the students that poor accommodation for teachers and reluctance of headteachers had prohibited good results for the district.

He also said that parents were reluctant to provide lunch for the pupils at school.

“How do you expect pupils to perform better if they don't have lunch at school?” he asked.

Etoyu said that there was need for a joint effort by education stakeholders to mobilise and improve the education standards in the district.

Etoyu also noted that the district lacked in-service training of teachers. He said that most teachers had old teaching skills that were not applicable today.
