GOVERNMENT has established an inter-ministerial task force on Iraq to assess the evolving situation and develop a strategy for dealing with negative effect arising from a possible military confrontation.

The foreign affairs ministry yesterday issued a five-point statement on the Government’s position on the situation in Iraq in which the formation of the inter-ministerial task force was announced.

Ambassador James Mugume of foreign affairs heads the team.

Officials from the ministries of defence, energy, works, transport and communication, tourism and industry and the President’s Office will be on the team.

“As a member of the United Nations, Uganda is committed to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the establishment of a global order based on peace, stability and the sovereign equality of state.

“We support the fundamental principles of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of State; the non-use of force; human rights and fundamental freedoms; peaceful settlement of disputes; strengthened multilateralism and the sanctity/primary role of the UN in the maintenance of international peace and security,” the ministry said.

The foreign ministry said Uganda supports the peaceful resolution of the Iraq crisis in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution 1441 (2002).

It said war in the Gulf region would not only affect the people of the Middle East, but would also undermine economic growth and political stability in many countries and especially the fragile economies of Africa.
