OTUKE MP Omara Atubo has drafted a motion commending President Yoweri Museveni for declaring a cease-fire in Pader.
He called upon LRA leader Joseph Kony, to respond by accepting the cease-fire which, he said, should be “respected, extended and widened as necessary.”
Museveni on Monday announced an immediate five-day cessation of UPDF operations in Lapul sub-county to give LRA a safe zone to contact the presidential peace team, religious and cultural leaders.
He said the cessation of operations in Wipolo and Koyo Lalogi took effect Monday and would end on Saturday March 15.
Atubo called upon the Government and LRA to use the cease-fire as a basis for peaceful resolution of the conflict and the restoration of permanent peace.
He hailed Acholi religious, cultural, and political leaders in the north for their tireless efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Lt. Gen. Salim Saleh, religious leaders and local chiefs were scheduled to meet LRA rebel leaders in Koyo, Lalogi, last Thursday but the rebels did not show up.
The cessation of UPDF operations followed a meeting in Gulu on Sunday between Museveni, the presidential peace team and the Acholi leaders.
Atubo said the insurgency in Northern Uganda had persisted for long despite many efforts to end it.
He said the insurgency must be brought to a speedy end so as to realise permanent peace in the region.
