LONDON –– Oscar-winner Mel Gibson, is being accused of using his Hollywood status to promote an extreme brand of Roman Catholicism.

He tried to suppress an article in the New York Times, which reveals his increasing determination to project his strict views on to the cinema screen.

The article exposes the fanatical beliefs of his father, Hutton, who is quoted as denying the that Holocaust took place and arguing that al-Qaeda played no part in the atrocities of September 11. Hutton, a critic of the Vatican, dismisses the church’s Vatic-an II reforms as ‘a Masonic plot backed by the Jews’.

Gibson has long been an open traditionalist, who believes the modern chur-ch has corrupted the faith, but until recently, he has kept his religious beliefs far from his film career.
