THE Catholic Church has asked President Yoweri Museveni to indefinitely extend the ceasefire he recently declared in the north.
The Church also wants government to allow negotiations without fighting until a lasting solution to the war is found.
“On behalf of all the stakeholders in this peace move, I most earnestly beseech you to extend the deadline you have given, to last as long as the peace negotiations continue,” a March 15 letter to the President signed by Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala read.
The Secretary General of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, the Rev. Joseph Obunga, (right) read it before journalists on Monday.
The letter was copied to the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, the Acholi Religious Leaders’ Peace Initiative, and the Government peace team.
It said, “This sincere action of Your Excellency has given immense hope to all peace-lovers, that at last the peace method is being fully accepted as the only way to end the 17-year-old conflict.”
“The Church,” it read, “has been waiting for 17 years to get a rare opportunity for solving the conflict through peaceful means.”
It said peace should have no deadline.
