KAMPALA — Keeping petrol in homes proved fatal yesterday after a big blaze ripped through a house in Kibuli, killing three people. The dead included a nine-month-old baby boy, his four year-old sister and their visiting aunt. The charred remains of Mohamed Bukenya, Laziya Namatovu and Kasifa Namuli, 28, were taken to the morgue, pending an autopsy.

Basajja summoned
KAMPALA — Makindye court has extended criminal summons to businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba. He is expected to appear on April 23 to answer charges of assault leading to bodily harm. Basajjabalaba who was represented by his lawyer, Diana Harriet Musoke, was supposed to appear before Makindye Grade one Magistrate Lydia Mugambe.

Four drown, 12 injured
SOROTIi — A boat carrying 18 women fishmongers on Wednesday capsized at Ocaba-Aukot Okole, killing four of them. Six were admitted to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital. Police sources said a total of 13 women were rescued but the sailor was stilling missing. District Police Commander Patrick Awai yesterday said two of the victims were aged below 18 years.

20 fishermen abducted
KASESE — Nine Ugandan fishermen have been abducted by armed DR Congolese militia from Lake Edward. The abductors who donned army uniform and suspected to be from popular Congolese Army (APC) also looted between 400 and 600 fishing boats and between 400 and 600 fish nets. They reportedly carried their captives and loot in the some of the stolen boats.

Gowon pinned
KAMPALA – The trial of Major General Yusuf Gowon yesterday picked momentum with his daughter accusing him of stealing one of his wives’ land title. Zura Gowon Batanda told the Buganda Road Court that her father stole the land title from the land offices after lying that the original certificate in the names of his wife had gone missing.

MTN sued
KAMPALA – Matthew Kimera Musisi, a landlord, wants MTN to be evicted from his land at Mulago for trespass. Musisi recently told Justice John Bosco Katutsi that in October 2000, MTN wrongfully occupied a portion of his land on which it erected a structure. He also said MTN has continued to trespass despite the warning.

Defiler jailed
KAMPALA – A UPDF Private is to serve 12 years in prison for defiling an-eight-year-old girl, the Supreme Court recently said. The court on a 4-1 majority, said the prosecution proved that Pte. Wepukhulu Nyunguli defiled the minor. Justice Joseph Mulenga, said there were serious unanswered questions.

LC5 in jail
KAMPALA – Mayuge LC5 chairman was yesterday remanded again until April 3, when prosecution told Buganda Road court that inguiries into the murder charge against him were still underway. Baker Ikoba Tigawalana and a UPDF officer, Sgt. Habib Kiganira, were jointly charged with the murder of one of the petitioners against Tigawalana’s election as district chairman.

EC assessed
KAMPALA – The Electoral Commission on Wednesday held a meeting with a team of officials from the International Republican Institute (IRI) based in USA. The team was assessing Uganda’s democratic process and the rights of the voters. Jefrrey Krilla, the director IRI Africa Division, led the team.

Case flops
KAMPALA – Hearing of a murder case against the former bodyguard of Busujju MP Vincent Nyanzi yesterday flopped. State attorney Joan Kagezi said a Police officer failed to deliver summons to a witness in Mubende when the officer got involved in an accident. The case was adjourned to March 27.

‘Limit MPs’
KYENJOJO – Movement leaders in the district have recommended that MPs be elected at district basis to reduce their number. During a meeting at Kasina hall on Wednesday, the leaders said each district should be represented by a male and female MP. They recommended that the army should retain the current 10 seats.

Iguru meets army officers
HOIMA — Omukama Solomon Gafabusa Iguru of Bunyoro on Tuesday spent several hours lecturing over 30 senior army officers from seven African countries on the history of his kingdom. The officers were from Malawi, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. They were led to Iguru’s Karuziika palace by Col. Francis Okello.

CAO survives CID probe
KAMPALA — Kalangala chief administrative officer and the chief finance officer on Monday survived being investigated by the Police after a Parliament committee ruled that they refund sh3m which they had failed to account for. Olive hope Nakyanzi and John Babalanda, had re-appeared before the committee the second time in a week to answer financial queries.

Ogwal works with Mov’t
MBARARA — UPC iron lady and MP Lira municipality Cecilia Ogwal has said she will work with the Movement on matters of development. “I do not believe in Movement politics but when it comes to development I join hands with them” she said. She was recently speaking at a fundraising ceremony for Kigaragara Primary School and Church in Kasumba sub-county.

Wakiso fights malaria, fever
WAKISO — The district, with the help of the World Health Organisation, have begun mobilising councillors and volunteers on a home based management of fever and malaria. Annet Bakunzi, the coordinator, recently said the strategy is designed by the Ministry of Health and is aimed at mobilising the community.

‘Scrap death penalty’
KAMPALA — HURINET, a human rights NGO, has proposed the abolition of the death penalty. It has also proposed that prisoners on death row be commuted to life imprisonment. Dr. Margaret Mungherera, the chairperson, appeared before the Constitutional Review Commission last week and made the proposals. Ends
