INTERNATIONAL airlines operating out of Entebbe Airport to the Persian Gulf and Middle East, have yet to make a decision concerning their future flights to this region.
In Kampala, Kenya Airways (KQ) officials said they would maintain their daily flights to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, “until further notice”. Dubai is a popular destination for local business people.
“We are still operating normally and our flights to Dubai are still on,” Emmanuel Okware, the Kenya Airways sales manager in Kampala said on Wednesday. He said the airline has 10 weekly flights to Dubai.
Ethiopian Airlines staff said the company would still fly to Dubai and Jeddah “unless we are advised otherwise.”
But news agency reports early this week, reported that several airlines had suspended all their flights to the Middle East.
British Airways was reported to have stopped flights to Tel Aviv effective yesterday.
Okware said if the Iraq war escalates, Kenya Airways would advise its customers intending to travel to Dubai on what to do. “But in the meantime, we have not suspended our operations to Dubai,” he said.
He, however, revealed that ever since the September 11, 2001 attack in New York, Kenya Airways suspended its flights to Jeddah,in Saudi Arabia and Muscat in Oman.
Ethiopian Airlines has five weekly flights to Dubai and flies three times a week to Jeddah.
“Even our Friday flight to Jeddah is on as earlier scheduled unless the situation changes,” said an Ethiopian Airlines official.
Apart from AfricaOne, which recently suspended its operations, Kenya Airways is the main carrier which ferries Ugandan, Rwandese and Congolese business people to Dubai.
All these Dubai-bound passengers usually board the flights from Entebbe International Airport. Ends
