THE USA has named Uganda and Rwanda as part of an enlarging coalition of countries backing the military operation to topple President Saddam Hussein and disarm Iraq.
This came a day after the Minister of State for International Affairs, Maj. Tom Butime, told Parliament that Uganda was opposed to the unilateral decision by the US and UK to invade Iraq.
President George Bush’s White House announced on Thursday that Uganda was among the 45 countries in the anti-Iraq coalition. Other African countries in the coalition are Rwanda, Eritrea and Ethiopia, according to a statement posted on the White House website.
AFP, the French news agency, also reported that Uganda and Angola were the latest countries to join the US-led coalition. “The latest members to sign on were Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Uganda and Angola,” AFP said.
“President Bush is assembling a coalition that has already begun military operations to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction and enforce 17 UNSC resolutions,” the White House statement read.
It said the coalition would liberate the Iraqi people from one of the most brutal regimes on earth.
