UGANDA’S World Junior Cross-country team has promised to reciprocate SN Brussels’ offer of four airtickets with a good performance in Lausanne on Sunday.
“You have done your part, we promise to also do ours on Sunday,” promised coach Johnson Kasajja after SN Brussels General Manager Geert Lemmen handed Boniface Kiprop, Isaac Kiprop, James Kibet and Moses Kipsiro their airtickets yesterday.
The teenagers could not hide their joy as they received the tickets worth $4000 (sh7.6m). The team, winners of bronze medals at the last three meets, departs tomorrow via Brussels and Geneva to Lausanne.
Lemmen, a keen athletics enthusiast, said he was moved into making the offer after hearing of the talented teenagers’ plight from The New Vision.
“I know that Ugandans can do very well if given the right push,” said Lemmen.
SN Brussels are keen sportsmen, and last year also sponsored the Kampala Kids League team to the Tivoli and Gothia Cups in Denmark and Sweden respectively.
Uganda Amateur Athletics Federation (UAAF) interim committee chairman Timothy Magala commended the sponsors. He however said they still have to get a sponsor for the fifth athlete Martin Kiplimo.
Kasajja emphasised the importance of having a team of five. “Having only four runners will put me under unnecessary pressure because of limited options in strategy.”
The runners’ fundraising team that includes has Olympic 400-meter bronze medallist Davis Kamoga is also desperately still searching for $ 540 (sh1m) airport tax.
Mango Kobs skipper Nathan Wasolo contributed sh30,000 while USPA gave sh200,000.
