THE Makerere University Council, the institution’s highest policy and decision-making organ, has set stiffer deadlines for private students to pay tuition fees.
A bounced cheque will now attract a fine of sh100,000 on top of the cheque value.
Officials said the council meeting on Tuesday also approved 10 new courses, bringing to over 160, the number of programmes offered by the 81-year old university.
The new fees policy, effective next academic year, which begins in October requires all students to register within the first two weeks on payment of the sh50,000 registration fees.
The students will also be required to pay 40% of the tuition fees within the first six weeks from the opening of the semester and the balance by the 12th week. Each semester is 17 weeks.
In the past, students would be allowed to pay the fees until the last days of the semester.
“Failure to meet the deadlines may result into the university terminating a student’s stay,” said an official who preferred anonymity.
The stringent guidelines were recommended by Senate late last year, citing the delay of university programmes due to late payment of fees.
