KAMPALA––Mukasa Lusambu , the chairman of Kampala primary school headteachers association has appealed to the ministry of education to revive releasing Universal Primary Education (UPE) funds to the private schools.
Government last year stopped releasing UPE due to failure by some private schools to provide effective accountability. Lusambu cautioned school heads against violating the ban on corporal punishment.

Kiswahili flops
MBARARA––The teaching of Kiswahili in primary schools that was supposed to commence this year, has failed due to lack of teachers.
The principal of national teachers’ college (NTC), Kakoba, Mwalimu Mkrugenzi Karoro said that the teaching of Kiswahili was intended to start in primary four.
In the two-page press release, Karoro said, NTC, Kakoba has produced 200 primary school kiswahili teachers but these are too few to teach in all schools.

UWESO gives scholarships
JINJA––The Uganda Women Efforts to Save Orphans (UWESO) Jinja District branch has donated scholarships to 11 orphans in the district.
The beneficiaries who are under the UPE programme were selected from the 11 sub counties in the district.
The money would go towards paying scholastic materials for the children. Each beneficiary got sh15,000.
While handing over the money to the orphaned children at Mafubira Sub County last Friday, the Jinja district woman MP, Mrs Ruth Tuma donated sh100,000 cash to wards the project.
She urged members to ensure that they engage into viable income generating activities to enable sustainability of the NGO to attract more funding that will help improve their income and help other needy children. Ends
