SC VILLA has been handed a tough Kakungulu Cup draw, and has a mountain to climb to get a record eighth title.
Super league sides join the action in the first round, and holders Villa are likely to face Buikwe in round two.
Their quarterfinal should be easy against either Top TV or Game Boys but thereafter could face Police or URA in the semi-finals. If all goes according to the book, a repeat of last year’s Express-Villa final will be in the offing.
Villa, like Express and KCC, have won the cup seven times.
The draws, held at the same time as the Nile Special Super League weekly press conference at Jinja Road Police Club yesterday, were overseen by league committee boss Justus Mugisha and administrative secretary Aisha Nalule.
Action is set to start on April 12.
The tournament, which is yet to secure a sponsor, will be played under new rules. The holders join the action from the first round and not in the quarterfinal like before. A home and away format has also been introduced for the quarter and semi-finals.
“We want to increase the competition and make the tournament more interesting, that is why we changed the format,” said NFLC boss Mugisha.
On the other hand, Express has a fairly good route, which sees a probable clash against Iganga and Kinyara before they set up a semi-final berth with the winner between KCC/Masaka and Heroes/Akol.
Express has reached the last two finals, winning 3-1 in 2001 and losing 2-1 last year to Villa.
