THE number of traffic police officers is down to 318 nationwide after another 213 were sacked over corruption, reports Steven Candia.

However, the officers will be redeployed to carry out general duties.

The “clean-up exercise” followed President Yoweri Museveni’s directive to traffic Police last year to withdraw from the highways, after numerous complaints of corruption.

The sacked 213 officers were “screened out” by Police chief Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala’s team which is also mandated to revamp the Police Force’s image.

Most of the affected officers were charged in the Police disciplinary court and reverted to general duties. In attendance were the national traffic liaison officer, Johnson Wadadha and the deputy Kampala traffic chief, Sarah Kibwika.

“A total of 213 personnel have been screened out of the branch leaving a total strength of 318 country-wide,” the director in charge of operations, Francis Rwego, said on Friday.

He was speaking at the Police training school, Kibuli while closing a three-month traffic induction course for 50 probationers. They were warned against corruption.

Rwego said, “You are joining a department that has reflected negatively in the face of the public. You should avoid corruption if you are to sustain your job and build your caree.”

He warned, “Management has no alternative other than taking the most stringent measures against perpetrators of such vice.”

The rampant corruption and negligence in the Police Force was unearthed by the Ssebutinde probe a few years ago. Action has been taken against some officers implicated.
