Japan yesterday offered a US$2.6m (about sh49b) grant to reconstruct the heavily potholed 3.8km Natete-Wakaliga-Bakuli road in the outskirts of Kampala City.
Works, housing and communications Permanent Secretary Charles Muganzi signed the agreement in the Japanese capital, Tokyo. Tadashi Takase signed for Japan.
Tadashi is the managing director of Konoike Construction Company, which fixed traffic lights at junctions at Wandegeya, Nakawa, Natete and Kibuye, all city suburbs.
The agreement was witnessed by the Ugandan ambassador to Japan, James Baba, city engineer Abraham Byandala and senior ministry officials.
Ministry spokesman Hyde Matovu said yesterday that work on the road, set to last seven months, commences in May.
“This is the second phase of works after the traffic lights at the round-abouts. The third phase, due to start in December, will cover the Kampala-Ggaba Road, which is 9.8kms,” he said.
Some of the traffic lights, are however not functioning for lack of spares.
Matovu said the faults would soon be resolved.
Konoike rehabilitated the junctions in 2000 for $5m but subcontracted other firms, Sterling International and Spencon Services.
Many Kampala city roads, such as the Nakawa - Ntinda road, are heavily pot-holed slowing traffic.
