A EUROPEAN Union (EU) grant of 29.9 million euros (about sh60b) will fund a fisheries management plan for Lake Victoria under the East African Community Partnership.

The five year project (2003/2008) is being implemented by the East African Community Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation (LVFO). It was set up in 1994 to create a common systems management for Lake Victoria conservation.

Dr. Richard Ohwayo, the deputy LVFO executive secretary was receiving the new executive secretary, Thomas Maembe, at Entebbe last week.

“A major activity of LVFO over the next five years will be among others strengthening of beach management, upgrading human resources capacity and establishing a strong information and data-base program,” Ohwayo said.
