A total of 90 Local Defence Unit (LDU) recruits from Kapchorwa on Tuesday night escaped from the UPDF Bumageni barracks in Mbale where they had been under-going intensive training.
The commanding officer of the UPDF 3rd Division, Col. Sula Ssemakula, said the escapees were later seen being transported in vehicle provided by some district personnel.
“The escape must have been with the full knowledge of some of the district authorities, because vehicles were even provided to transport them from Sironko to Kapchorwa,” Ssemakula said.
He said 23 of the escapees were later arrested by the Violent Crime Crack Unit personnel in Mbale.
He said since the recruits were not prisoners, they were not guarded during the training.
The escapees were part of over 200 recruits who had been moved from Kere District Farm Institute in Kapchorwa, to Mbale after the initial training.
Kapchorwa had sent 400 youth to be trained, and armed to defend the area against armed cattle rustlers.Ends
