THE Democratic Party (DP) has not allowed Gulu Municipality MP Norbert Mao to contest for presidency in 2006 on the party’s ticket, DP chief Paul Ssemogerere has said.
“In-house elections between those aspiring in DP have to be conducted to determine who to contest for public office on the DP ticket,” Ssemogerere said.
Former Kampala mayor Nasser Ssebaggala has also expressed publicly his intention to vie for the country’s highest office.
“Their intentions are mere inspirations, but in the end, things have to go through a proper channel,” Ssemogerere told a press conference at the DP headquarters in Kampala on Thursday.
Ssebaggala is currently studying in London, UK, to overcome the academic barrier to his candidature.
DP parliamentary caucus chairman, Ezat Wadri (Terego West), organising secretary Damiano Lubega and DP’s lawyer Joseph Balikuddembe attended.
The DP said it objected to the proposals of the recent Movement National Executive Committee and the National Council on lifting the two-term constitutional limit on an individual’s presidential tenure.
