Dr. William Olupot, the head of the Scientific programmes at the institute said Uganda, which has over 10 species of primates including the great apes, mountain gorillas and chimpanzees would hold the primates congress. He said the recently concluded meeting for primatologists in Beijing, China, observed that this would the first time, a country with great apes gets a chance to hold the congress.
The congress will be organised under the auspices of a global network, according to the International Primatological society of which Olupot is a member. it brings together professionals who have done research on primates.
“Our strong point was that we have a high diversity of primates,” Olupot said at a meeting held at the offices of the US based World Conservation Society in Kampala.
He said Mexico was interesed, but later stood down leaving Uganda, which also has a track record on primate research, “to take the show.”
Most of the research studies on primates in Uganda have been done in Budongo forest in Kibale and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Kisoro District.
