Torrential rains have washed away two bridges and rendered five others impassable in Kotido district.
The resident district commissioner, Kalyebi Higenyi, said road communication between Kotido town and Abim, 45 miles west of the district had been cut off.
He said the bridge between Kaabong and Kidepo National Park suffered the same fate.
“Labwor County has been cut off from the rest of the district,” Kalyebi said in a telephone interview.
The district information officer, Michael Okello, said five pairs of plough bulls were also carried away by the floods at Nalakas bridge near Kapedo, about 75 miles north of Kotido town.
He said the collapse of the bridges had also sent food prices skyrocketing.
“We no longer get food supplies from Lira, while the trucks using the Moroto road spend several hours on the muddy road,” Okello said.
The bridges washed away include Loyoroit, a steel structured bridge on the Kotido-Abim road, and Dopeth, on the same road.
Other bridges on the verge of being washed away are Lodoket angirigirya, Nakaosowan, Naryamabune, and Koberyo. Koberyo bridge links Karenga sub-county to Kidepo National Park.
Light vehicleas are using road diversions. Ends
