SUPREME Court Justice George William Kanyeihamba has supported the move by journalists to establish the internal regulatory mechanism for members.

Kanyeihamba was on Saturday addressing journalists at Hotel Africana in Kampala where he represented the Chief Justice, Benjamin Odoki, on the occasion to mark the World Press Freedom Day.

“I am very delighted to learn that the profession of journalism intends to voluntarily establish internal regulatory mechanisms for its members for accurate, fair and principled reporting and dissemination of information,” Kanyeihamba said.

The function was attended by among others, the Germany Ambassador, Klaus Holderbaum and the head of the European delegation in Uganda, Ambassador Sigurd Illing.

It was organised by the East Africa Media Institute - Uganda Chapter in conjunction with Fredrich Ebert Stiftung - Uganda.

Kanyeihamba urged journalists to take their profession seriously, saying that the press was described as the fourth pillar of State in any given democratic society, the traditional ones being the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary.

He also urged the journalists to be nationalistic and patriotic when exercising their freedom.

Kanyeihamba said the word press having had numerous definitions in the dictionary, covered a multitude of good and bad aspects.
