Several local firms are to take part in an international investment conference due next week in Kigali, Rwanda reports Savio Kyambadde.

Christine Umutonyi, Rwandan Ambassador to Uganda and coordinator of the Rwanda Investment Conference, said last week, “Some members of the Uganda Manufacturers’ Association, Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI) and the Uganda Investment Authority have shown interest among other members from different parts of the world.”

Between May 12 and May 14 participants will focus on Rwanda’s potential in tourism, information and communication technology, food processing, agricultural production, mining and the textile sector. Other areas will include infrastructure leather processing, textiles and garment production.

This is the first conference of its kind in Rwanda and Ambassador Umutonyi advises that more local companies and interested individuals register and participate. Forms can be obtained from Uganda Investment Authority and UNCCI. Registration is free but participants are expected to meet their transport and accommodation costs.

Rwanda has expressed interest in joining the East African Community. This will formalise a market of nearly 90 million people.
