The movie Devdas, which first premiered in Uganda at the 12,000-seater Didi’s Theatre and Auditorium, last year, garnered critical acclaim in Bollywood and the world over.

That it even got an Academy Award nomination in the foreign language film section speaks volumes. The movie premieres at Plaza Cinema today.

The story revolves around lead character Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan), son of the affluent Zamindar, born into a world of plenty. Riches notwithstanding, the only thing that means anything to him is his involvement with his lovely Paro (Aishwarya Rai), his childhood playmate. Back then, it seemed only he and Paro existed for each other. Their friendship blossoms into a full blown love affair.

This is disrupted when the elders send Devdas to London for further education. On his return, Paro’s mother (Kiron Kher) proposes that the childhood lovers (Devdas and Paro) be joined in holy matrimony. This, however, does not work out and we see the two life-time lovers try their best to survive apart.
