NATIONAL champion Charlie Lubega’s terrific form in the MOSAC rally last month suggests his Mitsubishi Evo4 may be the quickest but Moses Lumala’s revamped Toyota Celica ST185 could turn the form book on its head.

And the duo have shown unreserved respect for each other in the face of the UMOSPOC Challenge Rally that gets underway with a super special stage at Garuga double track circuit this afternoon.

TOTAL Rally Team’s Lubega, looking to equal Lumala’s 1999 record of four back-to-back National Rally Championship (NRC) victories, particularly singled out the 15-km Gavu-Namyoya section in Mukono district as the most challenging.

“Lumala has a better chance. It is tight and slippery if it rains, there is no margin of error. I am going to take it easy because you can never know which corner you are going to go off. And you can’t come out of it,” Lubega said. “It’s the most challenging rally this season.”

Caution will also be the dominant word in the cockpit of the Caltex crew of Lumala and co-driver Moses Matovu.

“Our car is not good on bumpy roads and moreover on tight roads. Charlie’s machine is quick but we will try our best,” Lumala (225 points) who trails Lubega by 15 points said.

If Lumala wins, he would knock the national champion off the top of the NRC standings.

Arthur Blick (Toyota Supra) and Lumala’s teammate Kuku Ranjit (Subaru Impreza), are unlikely to trouble the frontrunners but could easily find themselves at the helm should the leaders run into trouble.

Ponsiano Lwakataka and sprint sensational Omar Mayanja, are capable of chalking up impressive finishes.

Hotel Africana, BCE Brothers, Katumwa Sports Centre, Caltex Oil, UTODA, Alfa Dairies, CBS FM, Fire Masters, Battery Plus and MSL are co-sponsors of the UMOSPOC organised rally.
