uganda telecom has launched a restructuring programme which will involve overhauling its management structure and changing its corporate efficiency to become more competitive.
Aimable Mpore, the uganda telecom managing director said on Thursday, the reorganisation process is also part of a number of actions that have been taken to improve their public image.
“The changes, which are to kick off soon, are to be widespread and will see what had previously been a multi-business, changing into a mainstream concern with a narrow management portfolio,” he said.
He said as a result of the changes, all uganda telecom businesses, including
ISP and data, mobile and fixed lines networks will now be handled by a single technical department.
“We want to have the right people running the right departments. This will help us maximise our productivity,” he said in an interview.
He said that in order for this to happen, they will encourage existing employees to re-apply for whichever jobs they want. Other positions will be open to the public and for new applicants to come in.
Government divested most of it shareholding in the former state parastatal, Uganda Telecom (UTL) Limited, in 2001. The buyers paid about $34m for the shares.
Mpore said investors who bought into the former UTL made a commitment to become the leading telecommunications solutions provider.
This meant consistently investing in its operations, and using a cost effective management system.
He said that they now have a customer base of 200,000 and a workforce of about 1,100 people.
