FIFTEEN contestants, among them a cousin to the late information minister, Basoga Nsadhu, have so far declared intentions to contest for the vacant Busiki county parliamentary seat.

Isiko Mpongo, a businessman, is to contest for the 7th Parliamentary seat with, among others, the Guild President at Law Development Centre Makerere, Edward Bamuhamye Mukisa and former Iganga speaker and Busoga kingdom minister Baite Munobwa.

The New Vision has learnt that Mpongo, who stood in the 6th Parliamentary race in 1996 but lost to Nsadhu, has already started harnessing support among voters in the constituency ahead of the nominations.

A source at the Electoral Commission yesterday said they had already received a notice from Parliament that the seat was vacant.

“The Constitution requires us to organise elections within 60 days of receiving the notice from Parliament. A programme for nominations will be announced anytime next week,” said the source.

Other notables are the national traffic transport liaison officer, Johnson Wadada, the headmaster of Iganga Boy’s School, Fred Kasiisa and DP stalwart and 1980 parliamentary contestant, Paulo Wangoola.

Bamuhamye said he wanted to keep the Movement strong in Busiki county as it was during the days of Nsadhu.

“We are on record for having overwhelmingly voted for President Museveni in the 2001 presidential elections. This greatly owes to the efforts of the deceased minister. I want to keep the spirit,” he said.

Munobwa said, “Nsadhu was a veritable son of the soil. We should not despair and relapse into mourning the loss, but rather consolidate on the works and plans he had for Busiki county.”
