THE Judicial Service Commission has appointed 27 new Grade One magistrates, increasing their number to 80.

Solomon Muyita writes that eight of them were either former Grade Two magistrates or lawyers in active service, while others were from the public, but with a legal background.

The Chief Registrar Courts of Judicature, Stephen Musota, yesterday told The New Vision that the new magistrates had taken up jobs hitherto done by Grade Two magistrates.

“This is part of professionalisation of the Bench,” Musota said.

Those appointed after upgrading are Alex Mackay Ajiji, Gaster Kyawa Mugoya, Isah Serunkuma, Gerald Magellan Ssekagya, John Patrick Wekesa, Jolly Nkore Shwanda, David Kaye Cheptuke and Emmanuel Baguma.

Others include Aggrey Bwire, Godfrey Kawesa, Daniel Lubowa and Collins Kisembo.
