THE Government is to spend sh3b to compensate residents of Wakaliga and Natete displaced by the Wakaliga road construction.

Japan offered Uganda a US$2.6m (sh5.2b) grant to rebuild the heavily-pot-holed 3.8km Natete-Wakaliga road in the outskirts of Kampala.

The Ministry of Works, Housing and Communications spokesman, Hyde Matovu, said on yesterday “compensation is going on and sh3b is to be spent.

Most of the displaced have structures and buildings near the road. Matovu did not disclose the number of people affected.

He told The New Vision that the delay in paying the displaced was due the verification of the claimants by the the ministry. He said money was available for the exercise.
