MAJ. Gen. Katumba Wamala was the pace setter as police officers took part in the law enforcement torch run yesterday.

The sh5m City Tyres sponsored Inspector General of Police was flagged off by sports state minister Henry Okello Oryem at Central Police Station.

The 30km event took the law enforcement officers and sponsors to eight police stations around the city.

“I would like to thank the police force, who have come out bravely to support Special Olympics in Uganda,” said minister Okello Oryem.

“This is very encouraging for the Special Olympics Uganda and we hope this run could be organised annually so that it can help raise funds for other causes.”

The Torch Run programme, started by Special Olympics International (SOI), is held annually around the world. The run was designed to involve police personnel in community work.

Special Olympics Uganda (SOU) is set to send a team of 28 athletes for the World Special Olympics Games, an event for people with mental disabilities. The event is due in Dublin, Ireland, in June.

The team is entered in the swimming, five-a-side soccer, track and field athletics and bocce events.
