ABOUT 30 Presidential Guard Brigade personnel that have been guarding former Vice President, Dr. Speciosa Wandira Kazibwe, have been withdrawn.
The guards at her home in Ddundu, Mukono district and Bugolobi in Kampala were ferried on double cabin pickup trucks on Friday night, two days after Kazibwe resigned to take up a PhD course in Medicine at the University of Harvard in the United States.
“We are phasing out for police to take over.
We have taken some of our soldiers to Wakiso and Ntinda where the new VP (Prof. Gilbert Bukenya) has residences. We are leaving few with her,” a source in the Presidential Protection Guard said yesterday.
Lt. John Rusoke Tagafiire, who has been in charge of Kazibwe’s security, could not confirm or deny the withdrawal of the soldiers but sources said he was tasked to head Bukenya’s security detail.
Press secretary to the President, Mary Okurut, said she was not aware the guards were removed.
In Ddundu, residents stood on the roadside as trucks ferried the tents, machine guns and light weapons used to guard the former VP’s farmhouse.
Kazibwe has been holding the portfolio of Vice President since 1994.
Residents of Ddundu were disappointed following the resignation of Kazibwe last week.
Several residents of Kyampisi sub-county where Kazibwe resides said they will miss the mobilisation tours she conducts in the area.
“She could always join us in our local council meetings on weekends and even did a lot to mobilise the youths to join co-operatives in the sub-county,” Michael Kasule, a resident of Ddundu, said.
Kazibwe managed to extend power from her farm in Ddundu to residents for over 15 Kilometres free of charge. Ends
