SOROTI — Over 700 units of blood were recently collected in Soroti during the Uganda Red Cross Week. The Soroti Red Cross branch field coordinator, Andrew Julius Odongo, said 714 units had been received from the donors most of whom were youth. Soroti branch that covers the Teso region had beaten the target for eastern region by 14 blood units. He thanked those who took part in the exercise.

River polluted
MBARARA — Public health department of Nyamitanga division in Mbarara has written to Dr John Tinkasimire, the medical health officer for Mbarara municipal council, informing him that Alpha Dairy factory is polluting River Rwizi, a tributary of Lake Victoria. Alpha Dairy plant is located at Ruti in Nyamitanga, 2km from Mbarara The letter dated May 22, was written and signed by the division health assistant, Ronald Ahimbisibwe.

DPT vaccine
MASINDI — Only 41% of the children below one year in Masindi district received the full DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) vaccine in 2001. This was disclosed recently by the in charge of Buliisa health sub district, Geoffrey Kirungi, at a meeting on performance of the expanded programme on immunisation. Participants attributed the underdose to inadequate vaccines due to inaccurate population figures, logistical problems, ignorance limited mobilisation and lack of workers’ motivation.

Vitamin A encouraged
BUSIA — Dr Odoobo Wanyama, the acting director district health services Busia, has appealed to the people of Busia, to take their children aged six months to five years, for vitamin A capsules supplementation at their nearest health units. Wanyama said Vitamin A promotes child growth and development, builds resistance to disease, reduces severity of infections and is important for normal eyesight.
