Tororo cuts Cabinet
TORORO – District council chairman Nuwa Owora has reduced the district executive committee members from nine to seven. Owora sacked education secretary Damansio Okoth and replaced him with J. J. Oburu, a former secretary for environment. Jenkins Male Ongaria voluntarily resigned on May 15. Owora had a stern warning from the local government ministry to reduce the cabinet or risk loosing his job.

Iganga wants investigation
IGANGA — District council chairman Asuman Kyafu has directed chief administrative officer Nelson Kirenda to investigate the utilisation of funds for roads in the district.

This follows a decision by works minister John Nasasira to stop funding roadworks in the district for lack of accountability of previous grants. Mayuge and Rakai were the other blacklisted districts.

“Let the people in Mayuge, Iganga and Rakai know they missed the funds because their leaders failed to account for the funds,” The New Vision of May 27, quoted Nasasira as saying.

Police told to probe DEO
TORORO — The resident state attorney has referred the matter of the interdicted district education officer (DEO), Gamusi Doya, to the Police for investigations.

District council chairman Nuwa Owora told a council meeting at the Teacher Resource Centre recently that Doya was interdicted after it was alleged he illegaly promoted his wife from the salary scale U7 to U5, forged junior staff signatures, abused the office and misappropriated funds. Doya was given a month and two days to submit a written defence.

‘Blame it on local chiefs’
TORORO — District speaker Awere Otaala has decried the way rural residents were harassed during the recent graduated tax operation in the municipality.

Awere told a council meeting at Teacher Resource Centre that the public was not to blame for the poor collection because their chiefs had not assessed them. She urged the district officials to remit the 25% to village councils to help them run their councils.
