The Anglican diocese of west Ankole has resolved to promote the use of condoms among Christians as a measure of fighting the AIDS epidemic, church officials have said.
The head of community health education programme at the diocesan headquarters in Bweranyangi, the Rev. Benon Byamugisha, recently said this during a workshop at Katungu mothers union conference centre.
The workshop was organised by Uganda AIDS control project (UACP).
“We have preached to people to abstain from sex, but they have totally refused and many of our Christians continue to die of AIDS. We have finally decided to tell people to start using condoms in order to save their lives,” he said.
He said the diocese is in a sex education crusade in the districts of Bushenyi and Ntungamo.
Byamugisha said Christians were being sensitised on the dangers of AIDS prevention and the use of condoms.
“Demonstration on how to use condoms and distribution in various places is going on and the response from Christians is actually good,” he said.
Bushenyi district HIV/AIDS focal person officer Jonas Tumwine said plans are underway to avail funds to the diocese after the church joined the condom campaign.
Tumwine said the UACP will at the beginning of next financial year give Bushenyi district sh400m to facilitate the fight against the AIDS epidemic.
He said this money would be distributed to NGOs operating in the district.
